ECU (Engine Control Unit) programming goes deeper than standard OBD-II key registration. In ECU programming, we access the vehicle's main computer directly to read, write, or reset the immobilizer security data stored in the EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory).
This level of programming is required in several situations: all-keys-lost on certain vehicles where OBD-II programming is locked without a valid key present, immobilizer module replacement (the new module has no key data), ECU replacement (new computer needs key data transferred), and vehicles with secondary security beyond the standard immobilizer.
OBD-II programming is sufficient for 80%+ of key programming jobs in Port St Lucie. EEPROM programming is needed for the remaining cases - mostly European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, VW/Audi) and certain all-keys-lost situations on Japanese and American vehicles.
EEPROM access requires specialized equipment that reads and writes directly to the memory chip. This may involve "bench programming" (removing the ECU/immobilizer module from the vehicle) or "on-the-car" EEPROM access through diagnostic connectors. Our Autel IM608 Pro handles both methods for most vehicles.
